I am a mother to a five year old little boy who has Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This book is a collection of the first six months of my blog about him, my family, thoughts and feelings. Why did I decide to publish my blogs as a book? I suppose there are two reasons why I decided to do so. The first reason was because I received so many wonderful and supportive comments about how enjoyable they were to read and that they gave an insight into what life was like in living with a child on the autistic spectrum. This is something that I very much forget as living with Tom, for us, is our normality, there is nothing extraordinary from our point of view, but I suppose if you have never encountered 'autism' in your life then the blogs that I write would give you a glimpse into that world. I received comments from people who had no knowledge about autism and for whom this was their first introduction into 'autistic life' so to speak as well as receiving comments from parents of autistic children who gave me support and shared with me how much they enjoyed reading about my family. The general consensus from these parents and carers was that they did not feel so alone. There was someone out there who was going through pretty much the same daily ups and downs as they were. So for this reason I thought it would be lovely to have all the blogs together, under one umbrella, as a book. The second reason for wanting to publish my book is purely a personal one. I wanted a book that I could hold and which I could place on my bookshelf and show my boys when they are older. To tell them that this is what life was like but that we had fun and that I loved them very much. I started to write my blogs in October 2012. I had just finished writing my early years journey about Tom entitled, ‘Life on the Spectrum. The Preschool Years. Getting the Help and Support You Need', which documented all of the help, support and information that we received from various professionals, agencies and parents. This was published in the September. After I had finished writing it I rather felt lost as I had been writing every day and I still wanted to continue writing about Tom and our daily highs and lows and luckily at this particular moment in my life just happened to coincide with being invited by Glipho, a blogging social network, to blog with them, and so I did. I find writing about our family life very cathartic and it is most certainly cheaper than therapy. I simply have to write every day and keeping a blog helps me to accomplish this. The blogs in this book start in October 2012 and finish at the end of March 2013, so a full six months. When I started to write the blogs Tom had just started in a mainstream primary school, where Stephen attends, but was only able to manage two hours there with one to one support. This was a particularly difficult time for our family. When the book ends in March you will find that myself, Tom, Andrew and Stephen are in a more settled and happy place in our lives because of Tom’s placement in a specialist ASD school. The blogs have been published in chronological order and have only been slightly edited as I wanted them to be read as I had originally intended. They are simply my thoughts and feelings about everyday life, with my husband and two lovely boys, one of whom just happens to be autistic. I hope that you enjoy reading them

My Life With Tom Living with Autism The Blogs Volume One J M Worgan 9781490924410 Books

"My Life with Tom, Living With Autism. The Blogs, Volume One" by J.M Worgan is beautifully written. It chronicles the author’s day to day life in a way that doesn’t sugar coat the difficulties involved with raising an autistic child, but these difficulties are addressed in ways that inspire me. At the core of the book is a heartfelt desire to care for the whole family, a husband and two boys, in the best and most devoted way possible. I truly recommend this book if you would like to understand what is like cope with autism and maintain a balanced and loving household. The author has an attitude of thankfulness throughout, and she finds way to always appreciate the best parts of life. As I said before, it’s an inspiring book!

My Life With Tom Living with Autism The Blogs Volume One J M Worgan 9781490924410 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed reading My Life With Tom, Living with Autism. The Blogs, Volume One. This is the second book I have read by Jo Worgan and I finished it in two days.

Jo writes about life with her two sons Stephen and Tom. Tom is Autistic and Jo shares her knowledge of autism as well as the ups and downs of daily life of living with an autistic child. What I found particularly interesting is the transition from mainstream to specialised school that weaves in and out of the blogs and gells it all together.

Tom goes to mainstream school when he is four years-old. A class of 37, even with his own teaching assistant, proves (at the school's own admission) to be the wrong environment for a child with challenging behaviour and special needs.

In the following excerpt Jo shares her hidden heartache and sadness that parents of special needs children often feel yet rarely reveal.

"Well yesterday it was' Mufti' day at school; all the children could go to school in their own clothes and pay £1 for the privilege. Stephen (almost 6 and 16 months older than Tom) was very excited about this and told me the night before what he wanted to wear. However the whole `wearing your own clothes to school' was hugely problematic for Tom.

Tom associates school uniform with going to school and everyday clothes for weekends and holidays. Therefore why would he wear his normal clothes to go to school? This is perfectly logical for Tom. Before having Tom and learning about autism it would never have occurred to me that having a non uniform day could cause distress and anxiety for both the child and parent.

So what did we do? I knew that if Tom wore his everyday clothes then he would not want to go to school and I would have a very distressed Tom. Therefore Stephen did wear his own clothes but very kindly wore his school jumper over the top and Tom wore his uniform. As Stephen wore his school jumper Tom knew that he was going to school. Although I was very happy to get Tom to school without any distress it was with mixed feelings of sadness. My little boy was the only child (whom I noticed) was wearing his school uniform, he was so obviously different. What saddened me more though was that he was oblivious to the fact that he was the only child wearing a school uniform. I was left with the feeling once again that Tom was different, he could not join in with his peers."

Being a parent of a special needs child myself I was moved by Jo's often heart-rending observations of having a child that's a bit different and how she sometimes feels she's on the outside looking in.

After much discussion with the teaching staff and Education Department Tom changes schools and Jo waits anxiously to see how he copes. Hillside Specialist School in Preston, Lancs is a school for children on the autistic spectrum and sounds like the answer to Jo's dreams for Tom. To read how easily this little boy transferred from a mainstream class of 37 to a school where he was one of 7, with three members of staff, is heart-warming, especially in this day and age when specialist education is sadly disappearing. Every child has the right to an education and Jo's account of how beautifully her son accepted his new school is very encouraging and shows the importance of teamwork; the family, bus escort and teaching staff all worked closely together and provided this little boy with the stability he needed.

Despite the long term problems Tom's parents will have to deal with they have laid the best possible foundation for Tom's future development and with the added love and protection of his `big' brother, Stephen, I think we're going to hear more great things about Tom and the rest of his family.

My Life With Tom is a must read for parents and professionals and anybody interested in child development or autism.
I really enjoyed reading this book (and cried at times) and only deducted one star because it is a collection of blogs, which I normally do not enjoy.
In the blogs, this writer and mother writes about every day life with a young child with autism, and she does this very well. I could really picture the situations she described and could relate. I almost could not believe certain similarities in our stories. Our boys are the same age, got their diagnoses around the same time and we even turned out to be the same age ourselves (if I did the math correctly). There are also a lot of similarities in our boys behavior, which made me smile (and cry) a lot while reading these blogs.
I do recommend this book for parents with similar challenges, but definitely also for people who have friends or family with those challenges. I think reading this book would make understanding certain choices they make (like not attending social affairs) a lot better to understand.
I apologize for any grammatical errors I have made in this review, since English is not my native language.
great product
